Following the revolt by deputy prime minister Angelino Alfano and the PDL “moderates”, Silvio Berlusconi has been forced into a humiliating “last minute U-turn”, eventually voting for the survival of the coalition government led by Enrico Letta, and thereby ending the political crisis that he started, notes La Repubblica with satisfaction.

Despite Berlusconi’s surrender, Alfano and his faction are still mulling the creation of a new parliamentary group, the first step towards a split in the PDL and the birth of a new conservative party, reports Repubblica.
