The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) won its second seat in British parliament in a by-election in the south-east England constituency of Rochester and Strood on 20 November. The by-election was triggered when Conservative MP Mark Reckless defected to the Eurosceptic UKIP in September. Official results show Reckless maintained his seat, representing his new party, with 42.1 per cent of the vote, ahead of Prime minister David Cameron's Tory candidate with 34.8 per cent. UKIP took its first seat in another by-election following a similar defection in October.
