‘Conservative Juncker to preside over European Commission’

On Friday Jean-Claude Juncker will be designated by the European Council to succeed José Manuel Barroso as President of the European Commission, notes La Vanguardia, which adds that an agreement between member states is expected to reinstate socialist [Martin] Schulz for a further two years at the head of the European parliament. For the Barcelona daily —

Juncker's candidacy has succeeded in overcoming some obstacles, like Angela Merkel's initial doubts, but others remain. Britain's [Prime Minister] David Cameron is still opposed to the Luxembourger, which is why his appointment will likely be put to a vote […] Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has obtained a high price for weighing in behind Juncker. In exchange he may be able to attribute the post of [High Representative] for Foreign Affairs to an Italian.
