"Twenty years after the birth of the single market, the European Commission continues to work towards reinforcing this still incomplete tool of economic growth," states Italian financial daily, Il Sole 24 Ore, referring to Brussels' presentation of the Single Market Act II. The act consists of a series of measures, Il Sole explains, aimed at completing and kick-starting the European Single Market. It is expected to be adopted by the heads of states and governments by the end of 2013.
Transport networks and worker mobility as well as making the European Job and Mobility Portal (EURES) a true European employment office are included on the list of priorities drawn up by Michel Barnier, Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services. Barnier also wants to restart the "digital economy" by simplifying and standardising procedures for making on-line purchases and by stimulating the development of digital access to government administrative services. According to Il Sole, the Single Market II package "should not include any initiatives relative to copyright, a controversial issue in the eyes of many in Brussels."
