“Copenhagen runs the risk of losing half of its drinking water resources,” announces Politiken. The daily explains that, as it stands, one million of the Danish capital’s 1.6 million residents are serviced with water that has been abstracted from groundwater. However, if it is to comply with the provisions of EU’s Water Framework Directive, the city will be obliged to cease drawing on up to 50% of its current water sources. The goal of the EU directive, which was adopted in the year 2000, is to prevent water resource exhaustion and to improve the quality of the aquatic environment in rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
