Hans Dichand, Austria's most influential journalist, died on 17 June, at 89 years old. For 50 years, the man who was considered by many people to be more powerful than the Austrian chancellor, was the publisher and the main owner of Kronen Zeitung, a tabloid newspaper read by 40% of Austrians. The report in Die Presse pays tribute to Dichand's remarkable editorial and industrial success and also looks back on his use of the press as a political tool, which provided support to populist politicians like the extreme-right leader Jörg Haider.
