In the wake of a general strike called on July 16 and against a backdrop of closed town halls, the parliament is set to vote today on finance ministry legislation, which will usher in radical change in the public sector.
On the eve of the vote, reports Eleftherotypia, the two governing coalition parties, New Democracy, and the socialist party, PASOK, rejected an attempt by the radical left-wing party SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks party ANEL to have the law declared unconstitutional.
Town hall officials, angered by the axing of local administration offices as well as changes to the status of school caretakers and municipal police, gathered outside parliament on the morning of July 17. A further demonstration is planned to coincide with the vote this evening.
