The closure of public broadcaster ERT on June 12 is threatening to open a rift in the ruling coalition between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ New Democracy, and its two partners: the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and the Democratic Left (DIMAR).
Both of the left-wing parties are fiercely opposed to Samaras’ decision, to the point where “the spectre of elections has re-emerged on the dark screens of ERT,” writes Ta Nea
The Athens daily speaks of an upcoming meeting between the prime minister and the two party leaders that will attempt to steer around the ERT hurricane. Samaras is determined to seek a confidence vote, either for his government or for the reform of public broadcasting.
