Clement Meric, an 18-year-old anti-fascist activist, died on June 6 after being attacked the previous day in Paris by a gang of skinheads.
Seven members of some small far-right groups have been arrested and remain in police custody in connection with the death. The murder was condemned by all sides of the political spectrum, and protests took place in several cities around France.
For Libération, the event "follows the escalation of violent protests against gay marriage." The leftist daily explains that –
In the course of the protests, it cannot be denied that, even if they don’t come back again, small groups of extreme right protesters are back on the streets and, thanks to this, they have found a space for expression, sometimes implicit legitimation, certainly a thirst for action. We have rediscovered them again, after many years off the radar screens, a fringe that is at the far right of the institutionalised far right.
