“With a month left to run before the September 22 general elections, campaigning has intensified", notes Die Welt. The daily reports that, in the wake of Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble’s remarks at an election rally on August 20, “the parties are bickering over the issue of further aid to Greece.”

Angela Merkel has confirmed that a further aid programme may be on the cards, but that she is "currently unable to announce an amount.”

The opposition has voiced its doubts, with former social-democratic Chancellor Gerhard Schröder criticising the CDU leader for ”masking” and ”veiling” the situation.
