Twelve days after the beginning of the protest on May 31 against the destruction of Gezi Park in Istanbul, and more generally against the policies of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government, the Turkish prime minister sent in riot police to clear Taksim Square where the demonstrations were focused.

On the same day, Erdoğan announced a fourth protester had now died in Ankara since the demonstrations began, but denied Turkish media reports that he was killed by a policeman.
