"Another row over the capital's new airport," writes German daily Die Welt. Due to a citizens' initiative, "the EU has begun a legal case charging breach of contract against Germany," the paper explains, because the new air routes for the Willy Brandt Berlin-Brandenburg airport, which differ from those approved by Brussels, could fail to conform to European environmental regulations.
The habitats of several bird species, such as cranes, sea eagles, storks and crakes, could be threatened by take-offs and landings.
The opening of the airport, currently the costliest construction project in Germany, has already been delayed "due to insufficient fire protection," the paper notes.
