Will the Taliban receive a warm welcome in the heart of Europe? This is the concern of a number of European civil society groups, as an Afghan delegation prepares to visit Brussels this month to begin discussions with the European Union regarding the deportation of Afghan migrants to their country of origin.
This is not the first time that European Union institutions have engaged with the fundamentalist regime. However, according to an open letter signed by members of the Afghan community in Germany, such a meeting would only legitimise a regime that the EU does not officially recognise, and send a troubling message to Afghan refugees in Europe.
Whilst the upcoming discussions are primarily technical in nature, an agreement on deportations could exacerbate the serious and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, where respect for human rights is still not guaranteed.
