According to Belgian Development Minister Charles Michel of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR), the European ministerial meeting to discuss emergency aid for Haiti scheduled for Monday 18 January will be held "too late." The main subject of the meeting announced by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, will be the medium and long-term provision of aid, however, De Standard quotes a radio interview with Michel in which he insists that the current crisis requires "immediate technical coordination in the field." The chaotic situation in the country, the large number of planes arriving with supplies and the devastation of infrastructure have made the coordination of aid to Haiti extremely difficult.
