29 April 2025 marks the first 100 days of Donald Trump's second term as US President. The days have passed at a frenetic pace, stunning both America and the rest of the world.

The reshaping of the global order has been particularly painful for the European Union. While its economy is threatened by US tariffs, it has also been dragged into a territorial dispute over Greenland, which Washington has designs on. To the east, there's Ukraine – a candidate country for EU membership and close ally to the European bloc – which has to deal with a White House that is closer to Moscow than Kyiv.

To at least some extent, Europe has responded: it retaliated with its own tariffs, initiated closer ties with other international partners and increased its defence capabilities. But the rapid and aggressive change in the US stance has had a lasting impact on the governments of the Old Continent. The first hundred days have passed. Take heart, only 1,361 more to go.
