‘Euthanasia for children. Now’

“A collective of 16 renowned paediatricians sent a message of distress” – an open letter to the Belgian Senate Committee scheduled to debate, on November 6, an amendment aimed at broadening the 2002 euthanasia law so that it applies to minors, reports Belgian daily De Morgan. The doctors insist that “children in terminal phase endure unbearable suffering” but they cannot be accompanied to a more gentle death because the law does not authorise it.

The paper says it is time to get rid of this “grey area” and calls on the Senate to act, because —

There is a gap between medical practice, which shows that euthanasia is indeed applied to minors, even if it is not common, and the legal framework which [for now] does not allow it.
