Meagre pay, weak or non-existent social protection, and job insecurity. For years now, the press has been in a structural economic crisis, and it’s taking a toll on journalists. Once seen as privileged members of the elite, they are now facing downward social mobility. Perhaps worse still, their role in democracy is now widely questioned. At cause is the rise of social media, now the main source of information for many, and which allows politicians to reach voters without professional mediation – or scrutiny.

So exactly what kind of challenges are journalists facing in the 21st century? And how are they organising to defend a profession that everyone agrees – but for how much longer? – is still critically important? We'll be talking with Renate Schroeder, director of the European Federation of Journalists, and Marta Abbà, an Italian freelance journalist. The conversation, in English, will be moderated by Catherine André and Gian-Paolo Accardo.

🤝 This webinar is part of the PULSE project, a European initiative aimed at promoting cross-border journalistic cooperation.
