A poll issued on 27 October by The Independent shows support for Nigel Farage's anti-EU "Ukip has surged to a record high following the surprise attempt by Brussels to levy a £1.7bn 'surcharge' on Britain". The poll "puts Ukip on 19 per cent", with Conservatives and Labour at 30 per cent and Liberal Democrats on 9 per cent.
