‘Ghent to ban ‘allochtoon’’

Published on 14 February 2013 at 10:53

In Ghent, the official responsible for equal opportunities, Resul Tapmaz, has proposed to ban the use of the term “allochtoon”, a poorly defined word which usually designates someone with an immigrant background or someone of non-European origin, which has been criticised for being discriminatory.
On February 22, the Ghent city council is scheduled to greenlight the measure. On February 13, municipal authorities in Amsterdam also announced that they will also outlaw the disputed term.
