According to a poll of 21,000 Europeans in 14 members states, only 28% of EU citizens are in favour of the wearing of Islamic veils in school, reports Spanish daily ABC, “while 53% reject it.” The display of Christian symbols, however, generates less controversy, with 54% in favour. The poll seeks to find “if there are common European values such as politics or economy in the public sphere and religion or ethics in the private”. With controversies over the Islamic veil and the burqa flaring up all across Europe, the poll finds that “greatest rejection of this garment is observed in Bulgaria, on 84%, followed by France 68% and then Germany 66%”. 62% of those polled “consider Christian values characterise Europe”, concludes the conservative daily.
