“Islam and integration: French and Germans admit failure,” headlines Le Monde, after a pollcarried out in both countries by the international marketing firm IFOP. “42% of French and 40% of Germans consider the presence of a Muslim community ‘a threat’ to their national identity, and 68% and 75% feel the Muslims are ‘not well integrated’ into society.” “In spite of different colonial histories and different modes of integration,” stresses one IFOP pollster, “it is striking that the two nations overwhelming come to the same harsh conclusion.” In fact, adds Le Monde, “As Islam becomes a permanent and increasingly conspicuous fixture of European societies, public opinion is clearly tensing up, though disparities do appear between young and old and between left- and right-wing voters.”
