American intelligence authorities use a secret program called XKeyscore to “search with no prior authorization through vast databases containing emails, online chats and the browsing histories of millions of individuals” both within and outside the US, writes The Guardian in its latest revelation of surveillance programs detailed in documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden.
The British daily’s story adds “to the intense public and congressional debate” as National Security Agency officials faced a US Senate judiciary committee on July 31 about the top-secret programs.
