Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its consequences, as seen by cartoonists – week two

Published on 8 March 2022 at 11:25

As Russian airstrikes intensify and troops on the ground meet heavy resistance, the plight of Ukrainian civilians becomes increasingly worrying. With reports of indiscriminate shelling and actual or potential war crimes, civilians continue to flee the country en masse.

Along with those killed so far - officially 1,123 on 6 March - there are the wounded, military casualties and displaced civilians: more than 1.5 million have left Ukraine for neighbouring countries, Poland in particular. Their journey has not been without controversy, with many accounts of violence and racism at the border.

NATO has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's request to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine, fearing military escalation in the event of direct confrontation with Russia. Vladimir Putin has not ruled out the use of nuclear weapons.

The situation has of course perturbed and outraged cartoonists around the world. As such, this week we present another selection of the best press cartoons on the subject.

Cartoons by Jos Collignon, Shooty, Gatis Šļūka, Chappatte, Emanuele Del Rosso, Rodrigo de Matos, Seyran Caferli, Tjeerd, Paolo Calleri, Rafat Alkhatib, Kap (Jaume Capdevilla), Tom Janssen, Ramsés Morales Izquierdo, Emad Hajjjaj.
