On December 13, the British government lifted restrictions on hydraulic fracturing, – the controversial technique, often known as fracking, which is used in the extraction of shale gas. Exploratory drilling was halted a year ago, amid claims the process can trigger minor earthquakes and pollute the water supply.
According to Downing Street, the reserves could "generate billions of pounds" of revenue. A welcome relief, as strict austerity measures continue to subdue the economy.
