The German philosopher Jürgen Habermas passed away on 14 March at the age of 96 in Starnberg (Germany). The social and political theorist and prolific author was regarded by many as one of the most important voices in 20th and 21st century philosophy. He leaves behind a body of thought that explores communication, ethics, linguistics, epistemology, the philosophy of religion, socio-political theory and the organisation of democracy itself.
A witness to the horrors of the Second World War and Nazi atrocities, Habermas was to become one of the most ardent defenders of Europe, while remaining a progressive wary of both radicalism and authoritarianism. For his regular and lasting contributions to the core theoretical debates in Germany and across Europe – some of which we have published – we pay tribute to Jürgen Habermas.
