“Despite fine promises from European countries which pledged that they would make greater efforts,” the latest European Commission report shows that the number of trafficking victims increased by 18 per cent between 2008 and 2010.

The report puts the number of identified victims in the EU at 23,632, however, this is only ‘the tip of the iceberg,’ claims EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Myria Vassiliadou. In all, an estimated 880,000 people are thought to be the victims of forced labour, including prostitution, in the EU.
Myria Vassiliadou believes that the increase, which has mainly been caused by growing social vulnerability prompted by the economic crisis, is set to continue.
