On Saturday 28 March, millions of Americans took to the streets to protest against Donald Trump. Held in nearly every major city across the United States, the No Kings protests are directed against the US president’s social, immigration, and security policies, as well as his recent decision to go to war with Iran.
While the “No Kings” rallies remain a relatively recent and predominantly American phenomenon, they are finding resonance in Europe. From Paris to London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, and Lisbon, expats and locals alike have come together to protest the unprecedented authoritarian drift underway across the Atlantic and its impact on Europe.
The war in Iran puts Europe in an awkward position. While European leaders seem reluctant to become embroiled in yet another conflict in the Middle East, the Old Continent still plays a significant role in the war, serving as a rear base and supply depot for the American offensive.
