The European Council meeting, which opens on October 24 in Brussels, will tackle a host of controversial issues including the immigration problem.
At Italy's request, the provisional conclusions of the Heads of Government meeting call for a "fair share of responsibility" to be taken between all member countries to counter migration from non-EU countries.
The text is backed by several nations who are on the front line of the immigration issue, namely, Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece and Malta. It also suggests the formation of an ad hoc task force to identify concrete measures to be taken to combat illegal immigration and prevent further tragedies at sea, such as that at Lampedusa, as well as greater cooperation with countries from where migrants originate.
