At the European Council on 26 and 27 June the leaders of the EU28 are expected to decide on the name of the next European Commission President. Although he does not benefit from enthusiastic support and in spite of fierce opposition from the UK, it appears that the former prime minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Juncker is nonetheless set to take over from José Manuel Barroso.
“According to well-informed sources in Brussels, Cameron has not only failed to block Juncker's nomination, he has fast-tracked it”, writes NRC Next. The newspaper explains that the British Prime Minister "has, on the contrary, prompted more resentment with his personal attack on the man, and with his threat to take the UK out of the Union” if Juncker is finally appointed.
