According to Público, "There are no words, José Saramago took them all with him." Reporting on ceremonies to honour Portugal's Nobel prize winning novelist who died, aged 87, on 18 June, the daily comments on controversy sparked by the conspicuous absence of Portugal's conservative President Aníbal Cavaco Silva at the writer's funeral. In response to criticism of his non-attendance, Silva remarked that "he had never had the privilege" of meeting the communist author.
