"Unemployment rises with rate in Bulgaria now third highest in the EU," headlines Dnevnik, which reports on Eurostat figures published on 1st February. According to the EU’s statistics office, with a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 10.1% in December 2010, Bulgaria may soon be following in the footsteps of Greece and Lithuania. According to members of the Bulgarian business community interviewed by Dnevnik, the real rate may be as high as 16%, because the more “discouraged” job seekers fail to sign up at the state’s unemployment offices. The daily also notes that the figures are in stark contrast with government forecasts for 2011, which predicted economic recovery and declining unemployment.
