For the business daily, the curent chancellor’s victory is evidence of the confidence of the German electorate and its acceptance of austerity policies in the crisis stricken countries of southern Europe.
At the same time, Handelsblatt argues that Angela Merkel’s attempt to stifle debate over the risks involved in rescuing the euro was the main reason for the success of the eurosceptic Alternative for Germany, which scored 4.7 per cent of the vote.
