“Angie & Barack. He is very attentive to what she says, and interested in every detail of her life. He knows her secret wishes. He understands all of her wants by listening to her mobile phone — and this has been going on for 10 years,” jokes Tageszeitung.

According to Der Spiegel, Angela Merkel’s phone has been tapped by the NSA since 2002, when she was the leader of the Christian-democrats. Worse still, Bild am Sonntag claims that Barack Obama was “personally informed” about the monitoring of her communications by NSA chief Keith Alexander in 2010 — an assertion that does not square with the US President’s insistence that he not aware of any monitoring, when the Chancellor telephoned him on October 23.

On October 27, Angela Merkel’s spokesman emphasised that there is no proof of the surveillance allegations for the moment.
