Xi Jinping European Tour China France Hungary Serbia

The end of an imperial visit. On 10 May, the President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping completed his European tour, after visiting France, Serbia and Hungary. It was an opportunity for the Chinese leader - who had not visited the Old Continent for five years - to cement economic cooperation with his allies and to try to restore his country's image, which has been tarnished by growing European mistrust.

Over the course of his five-day visit, Xi first met with Emmanuel Macron (France) and Ursula von der Leyen (EU) to discuss heated issues - such as competition and the war in Ukraine - without making any real concessions. He then treated himself to two more leisurely visits, meeting Viktor Orbán (Hungary) and Aleksandar Vučić (Serbia), two leaders whose countries have close economic - and geopolitical - ties with China.
