‘Unemployment starting to wane’

According to figures to be published by the Portuguese National Statistics Institute on August 7, unemployment in Portugal fell in the second quarter of 2013 from 740,062 job seekers in March to 689,933 in June (16.4 per cent).

Jornal de Notícias points out that the change amounts to the most significant reduction in unemployment since 2000, which had continued to increase since the troika arrived in April 2011.

Several economists interviewed by the daily in recent weeks have highlighted that signs of improvement in the Portuguese economy are related to exports, privatisations, and tourism.
