In what Ta Nea describes as a “planned assassination,” on 19 July, the investigative journalist and radio chief Sokratis Giolias “who was well known for his role in the uncovering of several scandals” was shot 16 times on his doorstep in Athens. “Why was this journalist targeted? And why was he targeted now?” wonders the daily. No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, however Ta Nea reminds its readers of the warning to journalists and police issued 18 months ago by “a group known as the Sect of Revolutionaries, which emerged after the 2008 riots.” Since then the group is believed to be responsible for the death of one police man.
