“EU leaders to urge closer links with Nato at summit,” reveals the Irish Times. A document drafted for the European Council summit on 16 September presents “closer relations with Nato as a way of exploiting Europe’s bonds with Washington more fully”, especially in economic and strategic spheres, explains the daily. EU diplomacy chief Catherine Ashton will be tasked with implementing the 27 member states’ recommendation. This is a “politically sensitive move” for Ireland, which reaffirmed its neutrality in the second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
