“Jaws: Free trade, blockbusters and the cultural exception”
On 14 June, EU trade ministers met behind closed doors in Luxembourg to seek a common mandate for the European Commission in the negotiations with the United States on a transatlantic free trade agreement.
Talks had stalled by mid-afternoon, as France refused to budge on the “cultural exception”, according to which television, film, and online media would be exluded from any deal with Washington. France’s obstinacy put it at odds with the views of the European Commission, Germany in particular.
