British Prime Minister David Cameron and the Dutch government have won a powerful ally in their quest to seal national labour markets and social security systems as Germany joined the coalition against “benefits tourism”, writes Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. The newly amended law on free movement allowing for the legal removal of “burdensome gastarbeiters” has just come in force. It stipulates that immigrants who cannot find employment within six months may be stripped of their right to stay in Germany. The same sanction will be applied when the immigrant is caught wheedling benefits. The economic daily stresses that —
changes were made despite lack of proof that immigrants from Poland, Romania or Bulgaria abuse German hospitality.
According to the German Institute for Labour Market and Professional Studies, unemployment among Romanians and Bulgarians living in Germany amounted to 7,4 per cent, while for Poles it was 12,2 per cent in mid-2013.
