Anti-government demonstrators in Kiev on December 8 destroyed a statue of Lenin, which they said symbolised Russia’s dominance over Ukraine, reports Gazeta Wyborcza.
Some 300,000 people joined the protests, which broke out after President Victor Yanukovych failed to sign an EU association agreement at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, instead choosing to forge deeper ties with Moscow.

After Sunday’s demonstrations, President Yanukovych’s camp will likely have to decide whether to seek a compromise with pro-European opposition members in order to allay people’s anger, or simply wait until the Independence Square protests die out.
