Police have maintained a Roma database since 2012, which currently includes 4,029 people, including a thousand minors, even though ethnically based registers are illegal in Sweden, reports Dagens Nyheter.
Created by the police in Lund, in the province of Scania, southern Sweden, the database, which also gives details of links between people listed, is accessible to officers from other departments as well as the crime squad. The newspaper also points out that —
There are listings on numerous people who do not have a criminal record. It also includes the names of the head of of the Roma youth association, sports personalities, politicians and cultural performers.
