Following the anti-government protests that have brought 200,000 pro-European demonstrators on to the streets of Kiev on December 15, the European Union has announced that it is suspending talks on the signature of an association and free-trade agreement with the Ukraine.
“Words & deeds of President [Viktor Yanukovych] & government regarding #AssocAgreement [with the EU are] further & further apart. Their arguments have no grounds in reality,” declared the European Commissioner for Enlargment Štefan Füle on his Twitter account.
The suspension of talks has come two days “before President Yanukovych’s visit to Moscow,” in the course of which the Ukrainian leader may opt to sign economic agreements with Russia, points out Luxemburger Wort.
