A boat carrying hundreds of migrants – between 400 and 750 according to sources – capsized off the coast of Pylos on the Peloponnese peninsula on 14 June, in what is being called Greece's deadliest shipwreck of the year. At least 78 bodies have been recovered and more than 500 people are still missing. According to the President of the Pakistan Senate, Sadiq Sanjrani, more than 300 Pakistanis have perished in the tragedy.
Recent revelations by the Greek media outlet News 24/7 and the BBC cast doubt on the version of events provided by the Greek coastguards, who claim that the boat, departing from Libya, was moving towards Italy when the drama unfolded, and did not require immediate assistance. The United Nations has called for an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.
