Spain has reinforced customs controls on its border with Gibraltar, in the wake of a decision by authorities in the British overseas territory to begin creating an artificial reef in waters that are claimed by Madrid.
Authorities in Gibraltar affirm that the move has been prompted by the need to restore fish stocks, while Spain argues that it aims to deprive Spanish boats of access to an area where they have always fished.
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel García Margallo, has declared that the "party is over" and announced that he is planning other reprisals, such as a tax on entering Gibraltar and tax controls on the land owned by 6,000 Gibraltarians in Spain.
The British government has voiced its "concern" over his remarks, notes ABC, and the Foreign Office has declared it will "use all necessary measures to safeguard British sovereignty."
