State prosecutor Ivo Ištvan demanded on July 8 that Parliament lift the immunity of outgoing Prime Minister Petr Nečas. It is the first time in the country’s modern history that a prime minister is facing criminal investigation, points out Mladá Fronta Dnes.
Nečas allegedly bribed three MPs from his own party, giving them “cushy jobs” in state-run companies in exchange for them dropping threats to overthrow his government.
“Game with dynamite under democracy’s buttocks,” comments MF Dnes, adding –
While communists considered the law an extension of the class fight, […] today it is about the political fight. Political battles move to the realm of criminal law. […] The Czech justice system awaits a duel between law and demagogy. Its result will have a bigger impact on the country than a government composed of people who got their posts as a reward for their help [to president Miloš Zeman].
