The free-trade agreements that the European Union is negotiating with Canada and preparing to open with the United States "could have serious consequences for the environmental regulations currently in force in the EU," warns Dutch daily De Volkskrant.
The agreements will allow foreign investors to ask for financial compensation if they believe the regulations hamper their businesses.
Some members of the European Parliament and environmental groups fear that firms will put pressure on EU member states. "To avoid requests for damages and interest, the member states may feel obliged to relax these regulations," says the paper.
