In the inequality rankings France is slightly below the European average, at the same level as Germany or Poland. Inequalities are highest in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy. The United Kingdom and Romania are also members of this group with the widest gap between rich and poor. Conversely, Finland wins the equality trophy, followed by Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria and Sweden.
But are the rich always getting richer and the poor poorer? Over the last decade the situation has improved in Europe. In about ten countries there has been either a decrease or stagnation in inequality.
