British soldiers may have the length of their tours of duty in Afghanistan extended from six months to nine months in the period leading up to the conclusion of combat operations in 2014.
The plans, currently under consideration by the government, aim to better prepare Afghan soldiers and police to assume security responsibilities after UK forces withdraw.
The initiative comes as the government pursues a policy of dispatching “training missions” to unstable regions. It has aleady sent 300 troops on such missions to West Africa, including 40 to Mali.
