"The State must assume responsibility for the children of illegals", writes Trouw the day after a verdict was handed down by the Dutch Court of Justice. The court, explains the daily, has ruled that the State must subsidise the basic needs of the children of unsuccessful asylum seekers, because anything less would be "inhuman and illegal". In mid-July, the European Council came to the same conclusion, but the decision was non-binding. The matter was brought before the court by an Angolan mother of three who was due to be expelled from the refugee centre where they have been housed.
