According to the recent polls, there will be more eurosceptics in the European Parliament. The enemies of the Lisbon Treaty could even have a real influence on the regulations passed by the parliament, writes Andrzej Talaga in the daily Dziennik.
The statement by James Cameron, the leader of the British Conservative Party, who said he was in favour of a national referendum regarding the Lisbon Treaty, has sent shivers down the Lisbon Treaty supporters spines. The Tories, the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) and the Czech ODS party are to create a new fraction in the European Parliament, which could be its second political force. What is more, there will be another eurosceptic club formed by several national parties with Jean-Marie Le Pen or Geert Wilders as its leader.
Both coalitions , the results of the voting permitting, may be tempted to introduce amendments to the European law. Cameron, for instance, has hinted he would revise the social regulations and reduce the EU budget. The Union undermined by eurosceptics from within? It is a probable post-election scenario, writes Talaga. If the eurosceptics collect enough votes, the European Union may be forced to shelve plans regarding the common diplomacy, its president and foreign minister. “This will certainly cheer up Russia who is afraid of the rising power of the EU”, concludes Talaga.
